The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a significant plea on August 8, urging the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The petition seeks enforcement of the apex court’s earlier directive issued on December 11, 2023, in the landmark Article 370 verdict.
In that ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of Article 370 but clearly directed the Union Government to restore the statehood of Jammu & Kashmir “at the earliest”. Nearly eight months later, concerns have been raised over the lack of concrete timelines or visible steps toward reinstating the region’s full statehood.
The fresh plea emphasizes that the delay undermines both the spirit and letter of the court’s order, while also affecting the democratic rights of the people of J&K.
The hearing on August 8 could potentially clarify the Centre’s stance and accelerate the long-awaited transition of Jammu & Kashmir from a Union Territory back to a full-fledged state.
