Bold administrator, outspoken leader, and key figure during Article 370 abrogation no more
New Delhi, August 5, 2025 –
Satya Pal Malik, the former Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, has passed away at the age of 77. He had been unwell for some time and breathed his last earlier today in Delhi.
Malik served as the last Governor of Jammu & Kashmir before its reorganisation into a Union Territory in 2019. His tenure saw one of the most significant decisions in India’s constitutional history — the abrogation of Article 370, which ended the special status of the region.
Known for his bold statements and unfiltered political commentary, Satya Pal Malik also served as Governor of Bihar, Goa, and Meghalaya, and held roles as a Member of Parliament and Union Minister during his long political career.
Tributes are pouring in from leaders across the spectrum. PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, opposition leaders, and ex-colleagues expressed grief and hailed Malik’s contribution to Indian politics and governance.
Funeral details are awaited.
