Roads Sealed, NC Leaders Under House Arrest on Martyrs’ Day in Srinagar

On Martyrs’ Day, authorities in Srinagar sealed all roads leading to the Martyrs’ graveyard in Nowhatta, deploying heavy police and paramilitary forces citing law-and-order concerns. The National Conference (NC) claimed that several of its leaders, including top party functionaries, were placed under house arrest after their request to pay homage to the July 13, 1931 martyrs was denied. NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq called the denial “deeply unfortunate,” adding that July 13 is a reminder of sacrifices made for dignity and justice. The day was removed from J&K’s gazetted holiday list in 2020 after the reorganisation of the erstwhile state.
