Omar Abdullah Blames Pakistan For Continued Terror In J&K

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has squarely blamed Pakistan’s “inimical intentions” for the continued cycle of terrorism in the Union Territory, asserting that militancy persists due to Islamabad’s actions rather than the revocation of Article 370. His strong remarks come amid heightened security tensions following the deadly Pahalgam attack.

Pakistan’s Intentions vs. Article 370 Narrative

Omar Abdullah emphasised that terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir is not linked to the abrogation of Article 370. He stated that despite policy changes, terror attacks have continued unabated because of Pakistan’s consistent efforts to destabilise the region. According to him, “No matter what we do, if Pakistan’s intent is inimical, then we will never fully achieve a terror-free Jammu and Kashmir.” The former Chief Minister highlighted that linking militancy solely to Article 370 was a flawed narrative as violence has deep roots in Pakistan’s cross-border proxy strategy.

The Pahalgam Attack as a Wake-Up Call

Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians in April, Omar Abdullah described it as a wake-up call that exposed security lapses. He called the incident both an intelligence and operational failure, urging that accountability be fixed and systemic corrections made. “This Pahalgam incident brought two nations, two nuclear powers to war… Accountability has to be fixed… heads must roll,” he remarked, underscoring the gravity of the incident and the potential for escalated conflict.

Calls for Pakistan to Reassess Its Strategy

Omar Abdullah warned Pakistan against continuing its proxy war strategy in J&K, noting that India now treats such terror attacks as acts of war rather than mere security incidents. He stated, “Pakistan needs to seriously think about whether it wants to plunge the neighbourhood into a war.” His comments reflect India’s evolving stance that cross-border terrorism will draw significant retaliation if provoked repeatedly.

Security Shifts and Troop Redeployments

Highlighting tactical vulnerabilities, Omar Abdullah pointed out how the 2020 China standoff forced India to redeploy troops from Jammu borders to Ladakh, leading to a rise in infiltration and terror attacks in Jammu. He said that this diversion created gaps exploited by militant groups backed by Pakistan, resulting in a spike in attacks from Kathua to Reasi. The statement indicates that border management remains critical in counter-terror operations.

Commitment to Elections Despite Threats

Despite recent terror attacks, Omar Abdullah asserted that assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, ordered by the Supreme Court, would not be delayed due to security concerns. He stated that bowing to terror threats would dishonour the sacrifices of security forces who laid down their lives protecting civilians and democratic processes.

Optimism on Tourism and Normalcy

Amid security concerns, Omar Abdullah expressed optimism that tourism in Kashmir is bouncing back, demonstrating the resilience of the people. He noted that tourists returning to Pahalgam after the attack showed confidence in local security arrangements and the determination of Kashmiris to live normal lives despite provocations.
