In a significant move to instil national pride and security awareness among students, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced plans to introduce a dedicated module on Operation Sindoor in school textbooks. This initiative will be part of the revised curriculum under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and is expected to be rolled out for students of Classes 3 to 12.
What is Operation Sindoor?
Operation Sindoor was a high-profile counter-terrorist and rescue mission carried out by Indian security forces in 2024, which played a crucial role in neutralising cross-border threats and rescuing civilians in conflict-affected regions. The operation showcased the bravery, coordination, and strategic strength of India’s armed forces, particularly in volatile zones like Jammu and Kashmir.
The government believes that students should learn about modern military operations that have strengthened national security and reinforced India’s defence preparedness.
Two Modules for Two Student Groups
According to education ministry officials, two age-appropriate versions of the Operation Sindoor module are currently under development:
- For Classes 3 to 8: A simplified 8-10 page module with illustrated stories, interactive activities, and moral lessons about courage, unity, and patriotism.
- For Classes 9 to 12: A more detailed 8-10 page academic module focusing on the timeline of events, strategic decisions, international implications, and the importance of national security.
Both versions will be included in subjects such as Social Science, General Knowledge, or Civics, depending on the class level.
Part of NEP 2020 Curriculum Reforms
This move aligns with the vision of NEP 2020, which emphasises real-life relevance, critical thinking, and an Indian-centric perspective in the school curriculum. By including contemporary national events like Operation Sindoor, NCERT aims to promote a deeper connection between students and the current socio-political landscape of India.
An NCERT official stated, “The purpose is to inspire young minds by highlighting real heroes and actual national challenges. It’s not just about history anymore—it’s about living civics.”
Why This Matters
Including Operation Sindoor in the curriculum serves multiple purposes:
- Educational Value: It introduces students to real-world defence operations in an age-appropriate, responsible manner.
- Patriotic Sensitisation: Builds national pride and awareness about internal and external security threats.
- Holistic Learning: Helps bridge textbook knowledge with current affairs and real-life heroism.
Teachers to Get Training and Support
To ensure effective delivery, teacher training modules will also be developed. Teachers will be guided on how to present the topic sensitively, avoiding glorification of violence while focusing on themes like duty, discipline, and service to the nation.
Reactions and Rollout
The decision has been welcomed by several stakeholders, including defence veterans, educators, and parents, who believe students must be aware of the challenges faced by Indian forces. However, some education experts have advised a balanced approach to avoid over-politicisation in classrooms.
The modules are likely to be piloted in selected CBSE-affiliated schools by early 2026, followed by wider rollout across states once finalised.
