A landslide on Wednesday blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near the Nandini Tunnel, leading to a complete halt in traffic movement on the region’s most vital road link. The incident occurred amid heavy rains, which triggered sliding of debris and boulders onto the highway.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway serves as the primary lifeline connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, carrying essential supplies, goods, and passenger vehicles. The sudden disruption has stranded scores of vehicles on both sides of the tunnel. Authorities from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and district administration immediately pressed men and machinery into service to clear the debris.
Traffic Police officials confirmed that clearance operations are underway but warned that restoration may take several hours depending on the weather. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check the latest traffic advisories before starting their journey.
Landslides are a recurring challenge along this strategic highway, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities continue to caution travelers about the risks of sudden road blockages and emphasize strict adherence to travel guidelines. Restoration efforts are ongoing to reopen the highway at the earliest possible time.
