Indian Railways to Enforce Strict Luggage Rules: Weight and Size Limits for Passengers

The Indian Railways is set to enforce stricter regulations on passenger luggage to streamline travel and improve efficiency. The revised policy defines maximum permissible weight, free allowances, and marginal relaxations for passengers across different classes of travel.

Under the new rules, AC First Class passengers can carry up to 70 kg of luggage free of cost, with a maximum limit of 150 kg and an additional 15 kg marginal allowance. For AC 2-Tier Sleeper/First Class, the free allowance is 50 kg, with a maximum limit of 100 kg and 10 kg extra permitted. AC 3-Tier Sleeper and AC Chair Car passengers can carry 40 kg free, which is also the maximum allowance.

In Sleeper Class, passengers are allowed 40 kg free luggage with a maximum limit of 80 kg, while in Second Class (ordinary/express), the free allowance is 35 kg, with a cap of 70 kg. Beyond these limits, excess baggage charges will be levied.

The move aims to curb overcrowding in compartments caused by excessive luggage and ensure safer, more comfortable journeys. Authorities have urged passengers to pack light and adhere to the guidelines for a seamless travel experience.
