In a significant demonstration of India’s air defence capabilities, the Indian Army successfully intercepted and neutralized more than 600 Pakistani drones during Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025. This operation was a direct response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, attributed to Pakistan-based militants, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. The subsequent Pakistani drone and missile barrage targeted at least 15 Indian cities, including Jammu, Srinagar, Amritsar, and Bhuj. However, India’s integrated air defence systems thwarted these attacks, preventing any significant damage to military and civilian infrastructure .
Central to India’s defensive success was the deployment of the S-400 “Sudarshan Chakra” air defence system, which effectively intercepted incoming threats. The operation also saw retaliatory strikes by India, including the neutralization of a Chinese-supplied HQ-9 air defence unit in Lahore, Pakistan. This action underscored India’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and send a clear message against cross-border terrorism .
In recognition of the Indian Armed Forces’ swift and decisive actions, various state governments, including those of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have passed resolutions commending the success of Operation Sindoor. These gestures reflect national pride and support for the military’s efforts in safeguarding the country .
