India Achieves Major Milestone in Pakal Dul Hydropower Project

India’s strategic Pakal Dul Hydropower Project in Jammu & Kashmir has reached a new engineering benchmark with over 8.1 km of tunnel boring completed out of the planned 14.7 km twin head race tunnels. July 2025 alone witnessed a record 927 meters of excavation, underscoring rapid progress. The 1,000 MW project is a major component of India’s hydropower expansion on the Chenab River. The momentum has picked up significantly after the Indus Water Treaty was put in abeyance, allowing India to optimize its water usage from western rivers. The project is seen as both an energy and strategic asset, boosting clean energy production while reinforcing national water rights. Pakal Dul is set to transform regional power supply and contribute to India’s self-reliance in energy infrastructure, making it a flagship example of sustainable development with geopolitical impact.
