The Indian Air Force (IAF) and ADGPI – Indian Army are exploring the integration of Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles on the upcoming fleet of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAVs. This cutting-edge upgrade will allow drones to be guided via secure data links from manned fighter jets or Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS), enabling them to carry out precision air-to-air engagements while operating from within Indian airspace. The move marks a major leap in network-centric warfare capabilities, enhancing India’s defensive and offensive reach without risking manned aircraft. With the Astra Mk1 being an indigenously developed missile, the plan also aligns with the Make in India initiative, boosting self-reliance in advanced military technology. This integration promises a significant tactical advantage for India’s armed forces in future conflicts.
