BRO Completes ₹254 Cr Wanakha-Haa Highway in Bhutan, Just 21 km from Doklam

In a major infrastructure and geopolitical achievement, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed the ₹254 crore Wanakha-Haa Highway in Bhutan’s Haa Valley, just 21 km from the strategic Doklam tri-junction — a region known for the 2017 India-China standoff.

The new highway is poised to significantly enhance connectivity, troop mobility, and logistical support between India and Bhutan, especially in militarily sensitive zones. It also improves access for Bhutanese civilians and supports local development in the remote Haa region.

Beyond military benefits, the project strengthens India-Bhutan ties and reinforces India’s commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy. By aiding Bhutan’s infrastructure growth, India counters Chinese influence in the region while projecting soft power and strategic depth.

The Wanakha-Haa Highway exemplifies the BRO’s growing role in advancing regional stability through infrastructure diplomacy. Future developments may include additional road linkages to further fortify India-Bhutan-China border areas.
