The gates of the Salal Hydroelectric Dam in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir were opened as part of a routine reservoir flushing operation to remove accumulated silt. The controlled exercise is carried out periodically to maintain the dam’s storage capacity and ensure the efficient functioning of the hydroelectric project. Following the opening of all gates, the water level and flow of the Chenab River downstream increased significantly. Authorities have advised residents living along the riverbanks to remain cautious and avoid venturing near the river during the operation. Officials stated that the flushing process is a standard maintenance activity and is being conducted under strict monitoring to ensure public safety. The operation is expected to improve the long-term efficiency and sustainability of the Salal Dam while preserving the reservoir’s capacity for power generation.
