India Pauses Purchase of 6 Boeing P-8I Aircraft After 50% Price Surge

The Indian government has put a temporary hold on acquiring six Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft for the Navy after the deal’s cost jumped by almost 50%, driven by U.S. tariff hikes.

Initially cleared as a key upgrade to India’s maritime surveillance capabilities, the multi-billion-dollar purchase is now undergoing a strategic review. Defence officials say the decision reflects growing concerns over budgetary strain and the need to re-evaluate high-value foreign acquisitions amid shifting security priorities.

The P-8I, a critical platform for anti-submarine warfare and maritime reconnaissance, remains a proven asset for the Navy, but the halt indicates India’s willingness to renegotiate or reassess major defence imports. The pause comes at a sensitive juncture in India–U.S. defence relations, with regional maritime threats continuing to rise.
